The process of designing and making buildings is one similar to the growth of a tree. It begins with a seedling and grows with time and energy. A structural balance transforming in its surroundings through the seasons, and then, its part of the forest. Growing up in a family of builders, Stuart apprenticed in the trades beginning in 1969, that led to a journeyman status, and a practical footing. A formal education followed and provided a theoretical base essential for reaching higher ground. A builder’s work ethic, an education of merit and an innate gift of creative curiosity make a unique combination of skills, experience and knowledge. Similar to the vocational and universal education found in history with architects and master builders. Growth over time is the value that keeps giving.
Those practices have evolved to become known today as design/build or integrated project delivery. Following his apprenticeships in construction and forestry, the formal studies focused on sculpture and architecture. Stuart chose New York City to dedicate his time and energy in becoming a world class architect. Currently he resides in rural New England where he continues to grow, and to offer consulting services in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey and Hawaii.
He is a licensed contractor in NYC, a member of AIA, Brooklyn and registered with NCARB. He sits on the Inland/Wetlands Commission, Zoning Board of Appeals and Economic Development Commission for the Town of Woodstock, CT. He belongs to the Woodstock Business Association and the Putnam Business Association. He taught courses part-time in architecture as an adjunct professor for the Institute of Design & Construction and New York City College of Technology for twenty years, both in Brooklyn, from 1996 to 2016.
Before he opened his own practice in 1994, he earned his Masters degree in Architecture at Washington University in St. Louis, a BFA cum laude in Sculpture from University of Connecticut, apprenticeships with International Union of Operating Engineers, at A.F. Peaslee, Inc., Dave Wacker Logging, Inc., & Toshio Odate, sculptor & woodworker. His architectural internship was with Robert Lamb Hart Architects & Planners in NYC.
